(2008) So sweet, Ash!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was in the City for the launch of a watch collection. In an exclusive interview with Metrolife, she chatted candidly about her life after winning the Miss World title, her upcoming films and of course, hubby Abhishek Bachchan
What is it about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that makes the world swoon over her? From being a top model, winning the Miss World crown to ruling the roost in Bollywood; doing films in Hollywood, to finally settling down as the Bachchan bahu, the mysterious lady keeps everybody guessing.
“Is that yours?” asks the observant lady, as soon as she entered the room, pointing to a visiting card lying down. Then she proceeded to sit on the couch, ready to answer a stream of questions from Metrolife.
Being a Mangalorean, Ash admits, she has hardly lived in Karnataka. “I have been in Mumbai all my life. I have only come here for marriages or family functions, that too only to Mangalore,” she says. “So it’s great to be back in Bangalore after a really long time. It’s such a beautiful City and I love the ambience here,” she smiles.
There is one question on everyone’s minds these days. Why did the pretty lady say no to Dostana, a movie featuring husband Abhi, produced by Karan Johar? “Dostana was actually supposed to be our first film after marriage,” she answers. “But it’s not romantic. It’s about Abhishek and John, with the girl ending up with a third guy,” she laughs. “The expectations of the audience would have been very different had I been involved.”
But even Sarkar Raj didn’t have Abhi-Ash romantically paired opposite each other? “People knew what to expect from a serious film like Sarkar Raj. But they would have had different expectations from a Karan Johar movie since he is very romantic,” she quips. “Abhi and I discussed it and took this decision.”
She reveals that she was the one to recommend John Abraham to Karan Johar. “Abhi and John looked wonderful together in Dhoom and share a great rapport. In fact, they are poster perfect,” she laughs. Did Priyanka do justice to the role according to her? “She did very well,” she answers. “But the entire movie wasn’t a surprise for me at all, since I was there from the conception to the execution level,” she adds.
Ash is busier than ever now. She is shooting for Mani Ratnam’s Ravana in Hindi and Tamil (with Abhishek and Vikram respectively). Then there is Shankar’s Endhiran (earlier called as Robot) with superstar Rajnikant. The latest buzz is that the superhit jodi of Ash and Hrithik Roshan will be back in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next movie. She smiles, “Yes, that’s right. Work will begin sometime next year on that film.” On signing a movie with Vipul Shah, opposite Akshay Kumar, she says “I am waiting to start working on the both the movies.”
Shankar’s Jeans was one of the first films of her career. Is working for Endhiran a trip down memory lane? “Life has come to a full cycle for me,” she laughs. “I started my career with Mani’s Iruvar, Shankar’s Jeans and Sanjay’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. And I worked with Abhishek as well those days,” she exclaims with a shimmer in her blue eyes. “And I am working with all of them again today.”
Ash has experimented within the parameters of Indian and global cinema to play roles of various kinds. Which has been the most memorable? “Oh that’s an unfair question to ask,” she smiles. “I am so lucky to have worked with the best film-makers and actors in movies that are acting pieces,” she says. “I am so thankful to my fans and well-wishers for their undying spirit.”
As we start asking her about co-star Hrithik Roshan, with whom she sizzled onscreen in Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar, she cuts short: “Sweetie, I have to rush now. Why don’t you make up the rest of the story?” she smiles mischievously as she rushes out for another function.
