(1999) My first break – Aishwarya Rai
Aishwarya Rai may be just 25, but already she has a career many in the world of glamour would envy. Currently Ash is on a real high her film Aa Ab Laut Chalen is doing reasonably well. Also, she has just been chosen as the official ambassadress for Longines. And looks like her star is shining on big and bright.
But this former Miss World never really worked towards being a model. In fact, she was all set to become an architect when life took a different turn. “Modelling just happened,” she says. Her English professor at Jai Hind college was an amateur photographer and asked Ash to pose for her. These pictures got published in a fashion magazine and a magical face was launched. Soon ad-film makers wanted to sign her up and work started pouring in a frenzy.
Eventually, she did her first ad for Kailash Surendranath, for a talcum powder in the Middle-East. It was a short step from that to Pepsi and Palmolive back in Mumbai. From ad work she moved on to ramp modelling for virtually every major designer. Andin 1994, after spending two years working as a professional model, she took part in the Miss India contest where she was placed second and went on to represent India in the Miss World contest. It was while she was Miss India that she first got offers from Mani Ratnam and other film directors but her Bollywood career was put on the back-burner for a while after she won the prestigious title. “I am very used to doing two things at a time as everything in my career has happened all together.” So, she is not worried about balancing her two new careers, that of a film actress and a watch ambassadress.
