Confirmed! Aishwarya To Play The Role of Dalbir Kaur in Omung Kumar’s ‘Sarbjit’ biopic

Dalbir Kaur, 61, is the older sister of Sarbjit Singh, a farmer from Bhikhiwind in Punjab (just 5 kms away from the Indo-Pakistan border), who in 1990 while farming, inadvertently, crossed over to Pakistan after having a couple of drinks, got mistaken as an Indian spy and was given capital punishment in 1991 but was not hanged.

He was kept in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore for 23 years, before he was killed by inmates a few days after the death of Afzal Guru in India. During his 23 years in jail, his sister Dalbir Kaur, who treated him more like her son than her brother, got to meet him only thrice in jail and made it her life’s agenda to get him released. While she finally did not succeed in getting him released, she is determined to reach his real story to the world through a film titled Sarbjit being made based on his life that is being directed by Omung Kumar (has earlier directed Mary Kom).

When we contacted Omung, the director confirmed the smae saying, “Yes Aishwarya will be part of the Sarabjit bio pic and will be playing the role of his sister, Dalbir Kaur.” Further talking about how he managed to rope in the actress Omung adds, “In fact when I narrated the script to Aishwarya she had tears in her eyes and said a straight yes to being a part of the film.”

Aishwarya Rai who is busy with her comeback film Jazbaa has signed yet another interesting film. The biopic on Sarabjit Singh has created much intrigue! The industry and media have been waiting with anticipation to see who would play the role of Dalbir Kaur, Sarbjit Singh’s sister.

Producer of ‘Sarabjit’, Sandeep Singh says, “Yes it is true, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing the role of Dalbir Kaur Singh. The role demanded a very strong character with a powerful aura, and Aishwarya perfectly fits the bill. She has given spectacular performances in all her previous movies and we are confident that she will do justice to this role. After producing Aligarh and co-producing Mary Kom, I realized that content driven films are my calling which further motivated me to take up Sarabjit, that will create an impact and inspire the audience as well as the youth worldwide.”

Dalbir Kaur Singh was delighted to hear about the recent development. She says, “I am delighted to hear that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be playing my character in the movie Sarabjit. She is a very fine actress with two decades of experience in Indian & International films and a very strong personality amongst the viewers as well. I have full faith in her and I am sure that she will do justice to my character and bring out the real emotions behind my struggle”.

‘Sarbjit’ is to be directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sandeep Singh, Zeeshan Quadri & Omung Kumar. The shoot of the film is scheduled to commence in October 2015 and will be released at Cannes in May 2016.

Co-produced by Zeishan Qadri, who holds the rights for the film along with an NOC from Sarabjit’s sister and the family, the film will go on floor in the first week of October with a start-to-finish 60-day schedule. It will be shot in and around Punjab.
